President Peres and Cisco: Forging a Path Towards the New Middle East
Maantech, the brainchild of Israeli President Shimon Peres and Cisco CEO John Chambers, is paving the way towards a more innovative and inclusive high-tech industry in the Middle East. With ‘maan’ meaning ‘together’ in Arabic, this venture is a jumping off point for Israeli Arabs to join Israel’s booming high-tech industry,
The program, started in 2011, is a sort of “high tech finishing school” for candidates with a high-tech education looking for a job. It guides them through all the steps of gaining a job in the high-tech industry, from interview coaching to resume building and recommendations for specific classes if a candidate is lacking in a certain skill along the way.
Peres truly sees this program as part of a revolution that could help bridge the gap between Israel and its Arab neighbors, as well as with its own Arab population. The high-tech revolution, he says, “is greater than the French or Russian revolution.” He adds, “Did any of you high-tech folk kill anyone or try to take away the liberty of anyone else? Technology is the means. The goal is the enhancement of human beings.”
