Israel: A Home Movie
“Everyone asked me: How does your [strapless] dress stay up? Thanks to a handy seamstress, I boasted a wonderful gown. We ate gefilte fish, [cow] tongue, and beef… And, for our honeymoon? We went to Ramat Gan. We couldn’t go very far.”
Yaffa Lustig met her husband when she was 13 and got married in the streets of Tel Aviv during the 1948 War of Independence. The above quote is her story, featured in Arik Bernstein’s newest film, Israel: A Home Movie.
The film, a compilation of home movies taped on only 8mm film, shows what was happening on the sidelines of Israel’s major historical events. It puts wars in the context of weddings and camping trips and immigrant camps in the context of childhood play. It puts history in the context of life.
Israel: A Home Movie will be shown in Haifa, Herzliya, Holon, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem later this month and at international film festivals later this year.
