Israeli-American Scientist Wins the Nobel Prize in Chemistry

Los Angeles, California - October 9, 2013 - Dr. Arieh Warshel, distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of Southern California, was notified today that he is a recipient of this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Born in Israel, he earned his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Chemistry from the Technion in Haifa and his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Professor Warshel and his colleagues discovered the key principles behind computer simulations that are now indispensable in the study of chemical reactions and protein structures.

"On behalf of the State of Israel it is my honor to congratulate Israeli professor Arieh Warshel and his colleagues professors Michael Levitt (who also holds Israeli citizenship) and Martin Karplus on the historic accomplishment of receiving the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry," said Consul General David Siegel. "Thank you for your extraordinary work and the strides you are making for humanity. The people of Israel are very proud of your tremendous achievements."

Early this morning, Professor Warshel received congratulatory calls from Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu both of whom expressed great pride and admiration for Warshel’s achievement.

At a press conference held on campus at USC, University President C.L. Max Nikias said, “This is a great day for the University of Southern California, it’s a great day for the United States of America and the nation of Israel.”

Professor Warshel's research enables the development of advanced pharmaceutical treatments for cancer, HIV, and other viruses by allowing researchers to predict how drugs will interact with proteins. Relying on sophisticated computer models, scientists have already been able to develop effective new treatments for these and other diseases.
