Theater
Hebrew theater began in Moscow in 1917
and only found its way to Tel Aviv in 1931. Currently, Hebrew
theater in Israel is a collection of both contemporary works
including puppetry and pantomime, as well as more traditional
types of theater like opera. With performing arts being an
important element of the community in Israel, an increasing
number of theater companies are emerging to entertain a growing
audience. Many of our playwrights and actors come from art
communities in many other countries to express their work
in Israel, and many Israeli companies tour and participate
in international festivals. This flourishing industry brings
performance art to a new level and allows students of theater
to explore the realm of possibilities within movement theater,
multimedia performance or visual theater a unique combination
of performance and visual art.
All theater is a reflection of society, and the
Israeli theater expresses this to an extreme degree: it
not only reflects the socio-cultural and political developments
in Israel but also participates, quite actively and articulately
in their shaping.
