Dance
Dance as an art form in Israel has
reached extraordinary levels. Dating back only 70 years, the
spectrum of dance culture in Israel covers two very different
genres Israeli folk dance and dance as art. Dance companies
and performance organizations influence culture and economic
growth both in the Israeli community and around the world.
Folk dance was introduced by the early
Zionist settlers, reviving the traditional biblical movement
used for celebration and turning it into an energetic expression
of Israeli culture. Folkdance styles reflect the many different
traditions and cultures represented in Israel, including Spanish,
Chassidic, Moroccan, Yemenite, Greek, and many more. We now
see Israeli folk dance as an integral part of international
folk art, as well as the foundation of dance in Israel.
From the establishment of the State
in 1948 to the present day, a variety of professional performing
dance groups have been founded in Israel. From traditional
ballet to modern dance, Israel has created some of the worlds
most influential and awe-inspiring dancers and choreographers.
Israel is also home to many prestigious performing arts schools
and institutions.
